CAHP Statement: Health Care Leader Garry Maisel Named Chairman of the Board of Directors

CAHP Board of Directors has named Western Health Advantage CEO Garry Maisel as its Chairman of the Board of Directors, taking the reins from Blue Shield of California CEO Paul Markovich.

Maisel assumes his two-year leadership post as California transitions from its highly successful first year with the state health exchange and Medicaid expansion into the second open enrollment period. Under the Affordable Care Act, health plans play a vital role by serving as the access point for millions of Americans to receive needed health care through state and federal exchanges, expanded Medicaid or employers. more >>>

CAHP Statement: Second Open Enrollment for Individual Health Coverage Beginning November 15 is Critical to ACA Success in California

CAHP released a new guide to help consumers more easily navigate California’s second open enrollment period for Covered California and all individual insurance. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires most Americans to maintain health coverage throughout the year. The open enrollment period for 2015 begins this Saturday, November 15 and will conclude on February 15, 2015, allowing consumers to renew, change, or purchase coverage for the first time. more >>>

CAHP Statement: OPA Report Cards Offers Tool for Consumers Selecting 2015 Health Coverage

The Office of the Patient Advocate (OPA) today released its 2014-2015 HMO, PPO and Medical Group Report Cards, compiling health care ratings for the state’s largest health plans and medical groups. CAHP Statement: CDI 2014 Rate Breakdown Ignores New Benefits of ACA

California Department of Insurance (CDI) Commissioner Dave Jones today released an analysis of last year’s health insurance premiums that fails to consider the fundamental changes to health insurance that caused some Californians to pay less and some to pay more for their health insurance and ignores other positive changes brought on by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Commissioner Jones’ analysis critiques Covered California’s negotiated rates despite the fact that it was widely reported last year that ACA market reforms would result in major changes to the premiums some Californians pay. The CDI only has oversight of 5 percent of Exchange enrollees and the Department of Managed Health Care has authority over 95 percent. more >>>

CAHP Statement: MLR Rebate Numbers Continue to Trend Downwards

The United States Department of Health and Human Services today released the Medical Loss Ratio (MLR) rebate numbers for health plans across the nation. MLR requires health plans to spend 80 - 85 percent of each premium dollar on patients’ medical costs, or provide a rebate. The numbers released today illustrate a continued downward trend in MLR rebates, evidence of health plans’ work to accurately estimate medical costs and provide affordable health coverage. more >>>

Covered California Announces One Million Consumers Have Selected a Health Plan through the Exchange

Earlier today, the state’s health insurance exchange, Covered California, announced that it hit the one million mark. As of Saturday, 1,018,315 Californians have selected a health plan through the exchange since open enrollment began on October 1, 2013. The announcement comes less than two-weeks before the end of 2014 open enrollment and signifies a strong trend of continued momentum in Covered California sign-ups. While the exchange already exceeded original projections, enrollment numbers are expected to continue rising as the deadline to sign-up draws near. more >>>

Release of Covered California Enrollment Numbers

February 19, 2014

Earlier today, the state’s health insurance exchange, Covered California, released data on the number of Californians who have signed up for coverage since its launch on October 1, 2013. This report, which reflects enrollment through February 14, demonstrates continued momentum in Covered California sign-ups, with more than 828,000 Californians already enrolled in coverage. While open enrollment will continue for six more weeks, until March 31, 2014, the numbers released today exceed base enrollment projections for the entirety of the open enrollment period. more >>>

High Marks for California’s HMOs in State Report Card

Today the California Office of the Patient Advocate released its 2014 HMO, PPO and Medical Group Report Cards, which rate plan performance based on national criteria that measure how health plans’ contracted doctors meet standards in assessing and treating specific health conditions.
